A replacement pane is much easier to discuss when the supplier can see where it belongs and how you arrived at its dimensions. Start with a simple record of the greenhouse and each pane that needs attention. You can then ask for an accurate quotation without turning an uncertain measurement into a final order.
Look for the original assembly booklet first. For its own greenhouses, Halls directs customers to the pane or spare-part numbers in the assembly instructions. That reference gives the supplier something more useful than the overall greenhouse size alone. Halls replacement glass advice
Give each pane a clear identity
Choose labels that you will recognise later: ‘left side, second pane from the door’, for example. Add the quantity needed at that position. Keep differently shaped panes on separate lines, even when their overall dimensions seem similar.
For each line, record:
- Width and height, with the unit written beside both.
- Shape: rectangular, triangular, curved or another outline.
- Material and thickness, if known.
- Pane position, including whether it belongs in a door or vent.
- The source of the size: manual, supplier specification, intact pane or frame opening.
- Anything that still needs checking.
Using millimetres throughout makes the list easier to read. If an old note uses inches, keep that original note alongside the conversion so the supplier can check it.
Explain what you measured
An opening in the frame, the visible portion of an installed pane and the pane’s finished size describe different things. Label the measurement you have. Ask the supplier to confirm the required order size and any allowance for that particular frame and material.
For example, ‘approximately 610 × 610 mm, measured across an intact side pane; thickness unconfirmed’ is a useful enquiry. It clearly identifies the remaining question. It is an illustrative record, rather than an order specification for your greenhouse.
Add photographs and finish the enquiry
An overall photograph helps show the pane’s position. A closer photograph can show the frame or glazing arrangement, taken from a place you can reach safely. If measuring would involve disturbing broken glass, reaching over sharp edges or working on the roof, arrange suitable professional help.
Finish by asking the supplier to confirm the dimensions, thickness, shape and suitability before you pay. Save that answer with the pane list. You then have one consistent record to use when comparing quotations and checking what has been supplied.
